Aster subspicatus, Douglas aster 3.5" pot

Daisy-like flowers with blue to purple ray florets and a yellow center disk that blooms from late summer into the fall. Spreads vigorously via underground stems (rhizomes), forming dense clusters or swaths over time. This can be great for naturalizing an area but may require maintenance in smaller gardens.

Growing Conditions and Habitat

  • Sun Needs: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil Needs: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate a wide range of conditions, including dry or seasonally wet areas and even saltwater shorelines.
  • Native Range: Found across Western North America from Alaska to Northern California, and inland to Idaho and Montana, in habitats like meadows, streambanks, and forest clearings.

Benefits to Wildlife

  • Pollinators: The late-season flowers provide a crucial nectar and pollen source for a wide variety of native insects, including bees, butterflies (such as the northern crescent and painted lady), moths, and hummingbirds.
  • Caterpillar Host Plant: The plant is a food source for the larvae of several moth and butterfly species.
  • Winter Habitat: Leaving the stalks through winter provides seeds for birds and habitat for overwintering beneficial insects.
