Cornus sericea 'Kelseyi', Dwarf Kelsey Dogwood, 1 gallon

$6.00Price

The Dwarf Kelsey dogwood is a compact, low-growing variety of the red-osier dogwood. This deciduous shrub is prized for its seasonal interest, including its stunning red stems that stand out in the winter landscape.

Key characteristics

  • Size: Grows to a compact, rounded mound, typically 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.
  • Stems: The most notable feature is its bright, brilliant red stems that are visible after the leaves drop in the fall. The color is most intense on new growth, so periodic pruning is recommended to maintain the vibrant hue.
  • Foliage: The leaves are green throughout the summer and change to attractive shades of red, orange, or purple in the fall.
  • Flowers and berries: Small clusters of white flowers appear in late spring, followed by white berries that attract birds.
  • Growth habit: It has a tidy, mounded, and dense form, making it a good choice for smaller gardens.

Growing conditions and care

  • Sunlight: Performs best and produces the brightest red stems in full sun. It can also tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil and water: This plant is adaptable to a variety of soils but thrives in moist to wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens or wet areas of a landscape. It's also tolerant of urban pollution and road salt.
  • Hardiness: It is very cold-hardy, thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 8.
  • Pruning: To encourage the growth of new, brightly colored stems, cut out about one-third of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring.
  • Pests and diseases: It is relatively pest-resistant, and deer normally do not bother it.

Landscape uses

  • Winter interest: The vibrant red stems create a striking visual accent during the dormant season.
  • Foundation planting: Its compact size is perfect for planting near buildings or other structures.
  • Borders and edging: The mounded shape and dense foliage can be used to define garden beds or walkways.
  • Erosion control: Its dense root system and tolerance for wet soil make it effective on slopes or along streams and ponds.
  • Wildlife gardens: The flowers attract pollinators, and the berries are a food source for birds.
