Purple Shiso Perilla plants grow as warm annual herbs reaching up to 3" tall with bush-like growth. This beefsteak variety of shiso blooms in late spring through summer. Once plants reach maturity in the heat, shiso develops smooth wine-colored leaves similar to basil"providing a mild mint fragrance with astringent and bright flavor. Purple Shiso Perilla plants continue producing in late summer until your region's cool temperatures set in. In early fall, shiso varieties bloom small pink-to-white flowers as they go to seed.
