I can still distinctly remember the first time I tasted blackcap raspberries. I was at Sandy Farms u-pick in Boring, Oregon. The flavor is grown-up raspberries, a mix of floral, earthy, sweet, and tart like nothing I'd experienced. Jewel Black Raspberry is the standard commercial blackcap variety in the Pacific Northwest, selected for high yield, firm fruit, and disease resistance.
These starts were propagated by tip-layering from our own established canes in fall 2025 and have been overwintered on-site. They are rooted, actively leafing out, and ready to establish in the ground this spring.
Growing notes: Full sun, well-drained soil. Mature height 4–5 feet; space plants 3–4 feet apart and trellis or support canes. Self-fertile. Biennial caning habit — first-year canes (primocanes) fruit the following summer, then are cut to the ground after harvest. Hardy to zone 5. Harvest mid to late July in the Portland area. Native to eastern North America; naturalized and well-adapted throughout the PNW.
