Lonicera hispidula, Pink honeysuckle, 3.5" burlap pot

From Edgeland Nursery in Eagle Creek, Oregon, these plants will come wrapped in burlap and should be potted or planted immediately. Pre-order for pickup on the next second Saturday of the month.

Pink honeysuckle (Lonicera hispidula) is a deciduous to semi-evergreen native woody vine in the honeysuckle family, typically growing 10–20 feet long when supported, or forming a sprawling shrub without support. It grows best in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil, tolerating summer drought once established. Clusters of tubular pink to rose-purple flowers appear in late spring and summer, followed by translucent red berries. These plants have been cut back to encourage new growth and make them easier to establish.

Physical Characteristics

• Leaves: Opposite, oval to rounded, blue-green leaves, often softly hairy, with the uppermost pairs sometimes fused around the stem.

• Flowers: Clusters of tubular, pink to rose-purple flowers with protruding stamens, generally blooming May through July.

• Stems: Slender, twining or trailing woody stems that can climb 10–20 feet with support or spread across the ground as a loose shrub.

• Fruit: Round, translucent red berries that mature in late summer and fall, often clustered above the fused upper leaves. Berries are not edible for humans.

Habitat and Distribution

• Native Range: British Columbia south through Washington and Oregon to California, extending inland into parts of Idaho and Nevada.

• Environment: Open woodlands, forest edges, thickets, stream corridors, and brushy slopes from low elevations into the mountains. Adaptable to a range of soil types, particularly where drainage is good.

• Ecology: Tubular flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees, while the berries provide food for birds. The dense, branching growth offers shelter and nesting habitat. An excellent choice for wildlife gardens, woodland edges, fences, and trellises.
