A purpose-built growing mix for carrots, daikon, parsnips, and other root crops that need deep, loose, stone-free media to develop without forking or hitting resistance.
Most bagged potting soil is too light and fluffy for serious root crops as moisture retention is inconsistent, and long roots fork around texture changes in the mix.
This blend is engineered differently. Fine pumice and coarse sand provide a consistently open structure from the surface to the bottom of the bag, so a carrot or daikon root can extend straight down without obstruction. Coco coir holds moisture evenly without compacting over time. Worm castings contribute gentle, evenly distributed fertility and microbial life with no hot pockets of nitrogen that trigger forking. Sunshine #5 germination mix ties it together with fine sphagnum peat, perlite, and a long-lasting wetting agent that keeps the whole mix hydrating uniformly.
The result is a mix that drains freely, stays loose at depth, and feeds roots steadily without the uneven fertility that causes misshapen harvests.
What to add before planting:
- Fish Bone Meal (phosphorus-forward for root development)
- Oyster Shell (calcium, drainage at depth)
- Complete Organic Fertilizer for balanced background nutrition
Best for: carrots, daikon, parsnips, beets, turnips, radishes, salsify. Any root crop grown in a fabric or poly grow bag.
This mix is designed to be reused!
The structural components, pumice and coarse sand, are essentially permanent. They don't break down or compact over time and will outlast the grow bag itself. Coco coir holds its structure for two to three seasons before it needs refreshing. What depletes is the fertility layer: worm castings are consumed by the crop within a season, and the fine organic components of the germination mix slowly break down over time.
After each harvest, refresh the mix rather than replacing it. Remove root debris, let the mix dry slightly, then top-dress with a cup or two of fresh worm castings and a tablespoon of Complete Organic Fertilizer or Fish Bone Meal per five gallons. If the mix feels dense after several seasons, work in a small amount of fresh pumice or coir, 10-15%, to restore the open texture.
With annual refreshing, expect three to four productive seasons from a single batch before the organic components need meaningful replacement. At that point the pumice and sand are still fully functional.
