Potting Mix: Sunshine #5 Germination Mix

Seed Starting Mix for Flowers & Vegetables

A clean, fine-textured mix designed for starting seeds with consistent moisture and good airflow. This mix holds enough moisture to support steady germination, but drains well enough to prevent damping off and root rot. The texture is light and uniform, making it ideal for small seeds that need close contact with the soil surface, as well as larger seeds that benefit from easy root penetration. It’s especially well-suited for seed trays, soil blocks, and small pots.

Best used for:

  • Starting vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, brassicas, and onions
  • Germinating annual and perennial flowers
  • Soil blocks, cell trays, and small containers
  • Growers who want strong, uniform seedlings
  • Why it works: Fine texture = better seed-to-soil contact
  • Balanced drainage = fewer losses to rot
  • Lightweight structure = easy root development and transplanting

Good to know: This is a germination mix, not a long-term growing medium. It’s intentionally low in nutrients so seeds can sprout cleanly. Once seedlings develop their first true leaves, plan to transplant into a richer potting mix or begin light feeding.

Fine Sphagnum Peat Moss, Fine Perlite, Dolomite Lime, Long-Lasting Wetting Agent and RESiLIENCE (an OMRI-listed silicon-enriched amendment for better root growth, increased stem diameter, and earlier flowering)

$12 for 2 gallons, enough to fill 18 3.3” nursery pots.
